Bones music player for Android (dev.d9d.bones). Last updated: 31 October 2026.
Bones is a music player for your files and for internet radio stations you add yourself. Playing your files needs no internet. It does not have accounts, ads, analytics or automatic crash reporting, and no listening history or music files are sent to the developer. Crash and freeze reports stay locally on your device and are shared only when you choose Share.
What stays on your device
- Your music library. Bones reads audio files through Android's media library (permission “Music and audio”). Files are never uploaded.
- Listening history — plays, skips, likes, dislikes, playlists, queue and settings. Plays and likes of the playing track also store the time and an “in the car” flag when the player knows it (Android Auto or a Bluetooth car stereo is connected), so mixes and “My Wave” can learn what suits the moment. Your location is never determined or stored. They are stored only in the app's private storage and are used only to build mixes, “My Wave” and to restore playback. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
- Radio — your stations, track titles from the broadcast and the titles you liked. Used for “Liked on this station” and, if the same track is in your collection, to count the like in your mixes.
- Tag index — genres, years, album artists and loudness tags read from your files, cached locally.
What can leave your device
- Update checks are on by default. At app entry and in the background, at most once a day, and when you press “Check now”, the app requests the latest version from bones.d9d.dev. The server sees your IP address, request time and app version in the User-Agent; no library or listening history is included. The server keeps no log of these requests. Disable checks in Settings → Check for updates.
- Internet radio — only stations you add yourself. When you add or play a station, Bones connects to the address you entered or the one listed in a playlist file (.m3u, .pls) you opened. The station's server sees your IP address, the time, the app version in the User-Agent and that you are listening to that station; the station's own terms apply. Your library and listening history are never sent to stations. Bones uses no station directories or third-party services and does not download station images. You can limit radio to Wi-Fi.
- Online cover art — off by default. If you turn it on, for albums without embedded art Bones sends the artist and album name to MusicBrainz and downloads the cover from Cover Art Archive. This only happens on unmetered (Wi-Fi) networks. These services see your IP address, as with any web request; their own privacy policies apply. Nothing else is sent.
Other apps on your device
Like other Android music players, Bones offers a standard media interface, so Android Auto, Google Assistant, smartwatches, the notification and other media controllers you install can browse your library and control playback. This happens on your device; Bones itself sends nothing over the network for it.
Permissions
- Music and audio — to find and play your files.
- Notifications — the playback notification with controls and update notifications.
- Internet and network state — for radio, update checks and optional cover art; cover art requires an unmetered network, radio follows your setting.
- Foreground service, wake lock — to keep music playing with the screen off.
- Bluetooth (“Nearby devices” on Android 12+, only if you allow it; on Android 8–11 the regular “Bluetooth” permission granted at install) — to show your Bluetooth headphones' codec in Signal path and to recognise a car stereo for the “in the car” flag. Bones only reads details of the device that is already connected: it does not scan for devices around you and does not use location.
Children
Bones does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
